Phaistos is built on a low hill (altitude of about 100m from sea level), in the south of river Geropotamos (ancient river Lithaios), and dominates the fertile valley of Kato Mesara, which is surrounded by imposing mountains (Psiloritis, Asterousia, Lasithi Mountains).

A very important archeological site of central Crete, near Phaistos, on the banks of river Geropotamos, with special natural beauty is Agia Triada. The royal villa or small Minoan palace of Agia Triada, as it was named by the Italian archeologists that brought it to light in the beginning of the previous century, was built in around 1600 B.C. on a hill and it is one of the most important monuments of Minoan architecture, rich in finds.

To the north of Vathy, we come across the world-wide famous beach of Matala. It is an arm of land made of porous stone, weathered by the fury of the waves, winds and saltiness. As a result, tenths of caves, caverns and hollows have been formed. The bay was chosen by the Minoans to become the harbour of Festos after the destruction of Kommos and the port of Gortys, during Roman times, when Gortys was chosen to be the capital of Crete by the Romans.

According to tradition, it was the seat of King Minos and the capital of his state. The palace of Knossos is associated with the exciting myths “the Labyrinth and the Minotaur” and “Daedalus and Icarus”.

Agia Galini is known for its enchanting design as a village, since it is built on the slope of a hill, among the calmness and peace that the area has, next to the crystal clear sea and beautiful beach. The small but graphic Port completes the image, giving its visitors the chance to enjoy romantic evenings at the Libyan Sea.

The visitor may be a little surprised by the changes that are taking place in Crete’s capital city; Heraklion is celebrating its rich history and moving forward to a future full of potential.
