The Holy Monastery of Panagia Kaliviani, near Moires in Heraklion, is one of Crete’s most important spiritual and charitable centers. Its name comes from the small huts (kalývia) where hermits once lived. The monastery was reestablished mainly in the 20th century through the efforts of Metropolitan Timotheos. Dedicated to the Virgin Mary, it celebrates its feast day on August 23rd and attracts many pilgrims.

The monastery is widely recognized for its extensive charitable work. It operates a girls’ orphanage, a nursing home, and a center for the chronically ill, as well as a public primary school and kindergarten serving the local community. Additionally, workshops in ecclesiastical embroidery, iconography, and weaving keep traditional crafts alive while providing vocational skills. Its museum houses ecclesiastical and folk artifacts, highlighting the region’s cultural heritage.

Today, Panagia Kaliviani is a living institution of faith, service, and culture, where spiritual life goes hand in hand with tangible support for people, making a meaningful impact both locally and beyond.
